What MCC codes are used for

Card networks assign every merchant a 4-digit Merchant Category Code from the ISO 18245 standard. The MCC decides interchange fees, whether a purchase earns bonus rewards (groceries, fuel, travel), whether it is treated as a cash-like transaction, and how the IRS classifies payments for 1099-K reporting. Data source: the openly maintained public-domain MCC dataset, including IRS descriptions.
